Although you may have healthy hair, the appearance of the hair can change very quickly for a variety of reasons, from weather to styling. While stiff hair is common, there are lots of ways to avoid it.

The Causes of Stiff Hair

Put simply, it’s because your hair cuticle is damaged, the hair cuticle is the most user layer of your hair strand, and has lots of little scales. When these scales separate from the hair stand, your hair will start to become dry and stiff, losing its shine.

Once the hair shaft has become damaged, it makes it extremely difficult for the hair strand to retain moisture, often making it worse. This could result in frizz, stiffness or dryness.

Here are some reasons for stiff hair:

7 ways to Manage Stiff Hair

1. Use the right product for you

First step is to check that the product you’re using is right for your hair type and concern. Particularly when it’s stiff, you may require a hair mask or intense conditioner.

2.Check your brushing technique

Make sure you’re not aggressively brushing your hair, try gently brushing the hair from the bottom and work your way up to avoid excessive pulling. Alternatively use a wide tooth comb.

3.Protect your hair

Use a quality heat protector, apply when the hair is damp, before you blow dry and straighten the hair. Also try wearing a hat during sun exposer, or invest in a sun protection spray.

4.Consider how you dry your hair

Air drying is a good way to reduce heat exposer to the hair, even if you could try doing this once or twice a week. You could also consider using a Microfibre towel to try your hair, rather than a cotton towel as this is much more gentle on the hair.

5.Washing stiff hair

Washing your hair too much can lead to your hair feeling dry. Try using dry shampoo in between each wash to give your hair a break. Your stiff hair could also be a result of product build up, so check that the product is right for your hair, and when shampooing, ensure you’ve thoroughly washed your hair. Check you’ve also washed all the shampoo and conditioner from the hair with clean water.

6.Keep your hair moisturised

Once you’ve washed your hair, when damp you can spray a leave-in conditioner. This will give your hair added protection, moisture and shine.

7.Give your hair a break

Limit the amount of times you colour your hair. Over bleaching or colouring can damage the hair, and if done too often it doesn’t give the hair time to repair. Perhaps try considering a low maintenance option such as balayage or a colour nearer to your natural hair to avoid obvious root growth. You can also purchase a temporary root cover spray for dark or blonde hair.
