The ultimate guide to Goth Makeup.

Goth makeup is considered one of the most important aspects to any gothic look. It’s a chance to really add some definition and drama to your look.

The goth culture has always been a safe space for self-expression, and for you to be yourself. There is many alternatives when it comes to fashion and doing your makeup. Here are some tips on how to get the look you want.

How To Get A Goth Makeup Look

Here’s and easy guide to help you achieve that gorgeous goth makeup look.

Step 1: Prime Your Face

Probably the most important first step. Create a flawless, ‘doll like’ face base To ensure you get that 80’s 90’s gothic look. Start with a primer, this will give you a smooth base to work with, and it will also ensure your makeup lasts.

Step 2: Apply Foundation

Aim for a foundation which is 1-2 shades lighter than your natural skin tone, this will give you the flawless doll like appearance.

Step 4: Create Definition

Aim for a subtle bronzer to highlight your cheek bones, temples and jawline. This will add definition. Also consider a highlighter for your nose, top of your forehead and Cupid’s bow for that glowing look. Then finish up with a natural blush to highlight your cheekbones. Be careful not to overdo the blush, apply it sparingly.

Step 5: Smokey Eyes for goth makeup

This is where you add definition and drama to your makeup. By adding a bold, dark and defined look to your eyes, it will make them stand out amongst the lighter shade of your face for maximum attitude and drama. Choose an eyeshadow palette with darker shades. You’ll need a range of colours to give you the ultimate goth makeup effect. Start building them up, you could also consider adding a silver or white to the mix for more impact.

For the base, first step is to apply a dark gray shadow on your eye lid to act as the base of the look. Using a brush, start to blend the color into your crease, getting rid of any harsh lines. Then start to add a darker shade to the corners, once again using a brush to start blending across the eyelid. Gradually build up the colour step by step, until you’ve reached your desired look. You can the finish by adding a silver or white to the eye. If your a beginner of the Smokey eye look, here’s some further information.

Step 6: Line Your Eyes

Eye makeup is another key factor to any goth makeup look. Find your preferred eyeliner, whether it’s a pencil or liquid eyeliner, I would recommend a felt tip eyeliner for ease, but it’s totally down to preference. However, one thing we can’t comprise on is the colour of eyeliner. Ultra Black is the colour to use here, grab your eyeliner and draw along your upper eyelash slowly, drawing a swift line across your lash line. Angle the line as you reach the outer corner of your eye, focusing on making a smooth flick shape. For beginners, see here for a more detailed guide for winged liner

Step 7: Dramatic Lashes

Top tip, tilt your head back to the mirror, using your black mascara wand, start at the root of the eyelash and comb upwards, slightly moving your hand left to right to create thicker and longer eyelashes.

Step 8: Brow definition

Dramatic lines are key here, using a eyebrow pallet and eyebrow brush to fill in your eyebrows. Start at your natural eyebrow arch,  light upward strokes in the direction of your natural eyebrow hair and keep going until you reach your desired look. Consider using an eyebrow stencil for the wider shape to suit your face shape.

Step 9: Dramatic lips

Finish your goth makeup look with some lipstick. Opting for a dark colour is best, for example a red, purple or black is traditionally the best options here for that glam look

Goth makeup -Conclusion

Put simply, a Goth is someone who finds beauty in things others consider dark. There really is no hard and fast rule here, the gothic culture prides itself on being yourself and expressing yourself in a way that makes you comfortable.
