Are you booking a vacation and worried about flying with ileostomy?

Is anxiety about flying putting you off travelling?

Here are my tips for travelling with an ileostomy

Book an aisle seat

It is far easier to have an isle sear and know you can easily access the toilets when needed. I have always been able to relax better knowing I don’t have to keep asking someone to move when I need to get up. Contact the airline in advance to ensure you can pre book an aisle seat.

Eat a low fibre meal before flying with an ileostomy

I always eat a low fibre meal before flying. Avoiding fruits, vegetables and other high fibre ingredients means less toilet trips and a thicker output. This will also reduce any chance of a leak. I stick to things like eggs, bread, chicken, rice and pasta. Fizzy drinks can also cause ballooning so avoid these.

Dont rush

Get to the airport in plenty of time so you can relax and take your time. Rushing could increase the chance of a mistake leading to a leak. It can alao lead to forgetting essential supplies etc.

Stay hydrated and eat plenty when flying with an ileostomy

Staying hydrated is important to avoid fatigue, especially on longer trips. For longer journeys I usually try and buy meal replacement/protein drinks from the airport if possible, I always research retailers before. These ensure I get the right nutrition to keep energy levels up. I consume these mid way through the flight as they can be high in fibre, to limit toilet trips.

Enjoy yourself!

Flying with an ileostomy is no different, it just involves a little extra prep! Take your time, get organised and make sure you have plenty of wet wipes, anti bac gel, supplies and some spare clothing. Tale some time to relax before you travel, with a calm relaxed mind everything is always easier. Sit back relax and enjoy your vacation!
