Are you looking for anti-inflammatory smoothies recipes to help with ulcerative colitis?

I have written many times how difficult it is to eat with ulcerative colitis, particularly during a flare-up. Before surgery for ulcerative colitis, I suffered with a lack of energy. During bad flare-ups, I had no energy to make food, especially to prepare well balanced healthy foods.

One way around this for me, was smoothies. Smoothies are relatively easy to prepare, as you just throw all the ingredients in to a blender. I also made enough in one time for 2-3 servings, to be stored in the fridge for later in the week. This was very useful for moments when I was too ill/tired to make food.

Smoothies are also a great way for people with ulcerative colitis to eat fruits and vegetables in a way that is easier on the gut. It is important to include these to improve immune system and repalce nutrients lost with frequent diarrhea. They are also a great way of adding extra calories to your diet.

Here are my anti inflammatory smoothies recipes.

Banana, Carrot Ginger and Turmeric

Combine chopped banana, chopped carrot and peeled fresh ginger and a pinch of turmeric with some lactose free/coconut or almond milk and blend with ice.

Bananas are easy to digest and rich in potassium which people with ulcerative colitis often lack. Carrots are nutrient rich and contain anti oxidents which are great for people with ulcerative colitis. Ginger and turmeric are great anti inflammatory ingredients.

Blueberry, Avocado and Spinach

Combine blueberries, half an avocado and some spinach with ice and lactose free/almond/coconut milk and blend until smooth.

Blueberries can help relieve inflammation and are rich in antioxidents and vitamins. Avocado are great source for healthy fats, which are important if you are losing weight or malnourished from a flare-up. They are also high in pottassium. Spinach is a very good anti inflammatory and source of vitamins.

Also consider adding smooth peanut butter to these recipes to increase calories/protein if you are malnourished from a flareup. Peanut butter is agood way of consuming nuts safely while enjoying the nutritional benefits.

If you have signs of a flare-up, it’s beneficial to think about what you eat. Some foods can trigger or make symptoms worse, while others can help to ease symptoms and reduce inflammation. Consider including anti-inflammatory foods in your diet with these anti-inflammatory smoothies recipes with and seek medical advice if you have questions or concerns.
