I’m totally obsessed with anything glittery and sparkly, particularly around Christmas. The festive season gives us an excuse to bring out our inner child, let our hair down and dress up! From glittery eyeshadows, sparkly outfits to sassy hairstyles, there are countless ways to enjoy the holidays. If you need to know how to put in hair tinsel, you are in the right place!

One of my favourite Christmas hairstyles was made popular in the ’90s, and now I am beyond excited the tinsel hair-do is back! Typically you would visit a hair salon, and stylists would use different application techniques to apply glitter extensions to your hair, but the longest-lasting and effective method I found is the single knot.

By following my guide, you no longer have to spend tons of money and time in salons.

I am here to show you on how you can achieve the same look from the comfort of your own home! You can simply do this on your own or plan a girly night in.

How to put in hair tinsel

I am forever being asked how to do this. Here’s 8 simple steps to add sparkle and glam to your hair this Christmas!

  1. Start with clean hair as your tinsel could slide out it if your hair is oily.
  2. Begin by parting your hair, you can use this method on a centred parting or a side parting.
  3. Use 1 strand of tinsel and place it into a loop so the ends meet.
  4. Create a slip knot with one of the stands by pinching the folded end of the tinsel with 1 hand to form a loop. Use your other hand to feed the end of the tinsel through the loop. Then, use your thumb and index finger to pinch the strands of tinsel and pull back to make the slip knot.
  5. Then pull approx 5 strands of hair through the slip knot and tighten the slip knot near the scalp, and tighten the tinsel loop.
  6. Tie a double knot using the tinsel to secure the hair
  7. Repeat this as many times as needed to give you the desired look, working your way around the head
  8. Finally, trim the tinsel at the bottom of the hair to align with your hair length
